Status Symbol Cars

Can you really tell if someone is wealthy by the type of car that they drive? Are luxury cars such as Mercedes and BMW really "status symbols"? For the most part not really. First, let's examine what the "true" status cars are.

Without a doubt, cars like Rolls Royce and Ferrari indicate some sort of status. Cars like these get a second or third look even in cities like NYC and L.A Price tags run in the $100k range and everyone knows how much these cars costs.

When it comes to cars like Mercedes and BMW it's another story. Sure these are nice cars, however their entry level models start around at the $30k range. These are hardly outrageous prices and these cars are within the financial reach of may individuals and families. Even top of the line luxury models such as a S-Class from Mercedes or a 7-Series BMW are not indicators of wealth because as we all know, many people lease these autos.

What's really elite is paying in order to be put on the wait list for a car. The most exclusive cars cannot be purchased with cash alone. This car is the electric Tesla Roadster. Not only is it super powerful and fast; it is also electric. Want to buy one? You'll have to shell out five thousand bucks in order to get on the wait list. Now that is exclusivity!

When it comes to the "cool: factor, you can't really argue with armored cars. These autos are made to withstand bullets. Ford manufacturers a bulletproof Lincoln Town car that will sell for approximately $140k. So who drives these bad boys? It's mostly folks like billionaires, pop stars and government officials.

Some individuals consider bigger vehicles such as SUV's and Hummer's to be status symbols because these cars consume a lot of gas. However, expect some disapproval if you decide to drive these type of cars. Many people are not big fans of these big vehicles and will not hesitate to express themselves.

Due to the economy, fewer consumers are making vehicle purchases with status in mind. The majority are more concerned with mileage, efficiency and reliability. Consumers are less concerned about status but more about being able to afford to fill up the gas tank.

Many people also pick their car in order to make a statement. Cars like the Ford Focus EV, Ford Fusion hybrid and Toyota Prius are known for being environmentally friendly. Some consumers are choosing to buy such an efficient car due to concerns about foreign oil dependency, global warming and high gas prices.

There will always be people with money who will continue to buy big SUV's despite high gas prices and exotics. However, it looks like most people are going for the more practical choices these days.
