If you've noticed any tiny problems at all during the summer and into the fall, don't hesitate to get it fixed. The worst time for a small problem to become a big problem is during the harsh winter months. Don't ignore the fact that the car doesn't always start properly or makes a strange noise. That's the car's way of telling you that something is wrong! Don't think that it will just "go away". It won't. When you are left stranded on the side of the road when it's below freezing outside you will be kicking yourself for not getting it fixed sooner.
Even if you haven't noticed a problem, that doesn't mean that you are ready for the winter. Before it gets too cold, check under the hood, or bring it to a maintenance shop to get checked out by a professional. Important places to inspect are the cooling system, heater and defroster, and windshield washer fluid. Don't think that because it's not summer the cooling system isn't important. Cars can over heat in the winter months too! The cooling system should be flushed and refilled if necessary. A working heater and defroster are obviously absolute necessities in the dead of winter for driver comfort and window visibility purposes. If your windshield wipers are old, replace them before the snow hits. It takes a lot more out of a blade to push snow and ice off of the car than it takes to push rain off of the car. Winter blades can be purchased that fight the ice. In addition, make sure that your windshield washer fluid bottle is always full. All of that salt and dirt that the plows are putting on the roads will end up on your windshield.
It's also important to make sure that your lights and tires are in proper working order. There are a lot less hours of sunlight in the winter, meaning that you will be using your lights for visibility and safety purposes a whole lot more. If tires are worn, replace them. If your tires have low pressure or tread you may be able to get away with using them on dry pavement, but you will have trouble driving on icy, wet surfaces.
To be on the safe side, create a winter emergency kit for your car. It should include items such as blankets, gloves, flares, a shovel, sand, and a flashlight.
