Why and how to adjust your mirrors

Before you give us on how best to set your mirror or any other mirror for that matter, let us begin by understanding the importance of doing so. After recognizing the fact that the driver needs more than two eyes, it is important to understand the reasons behind the need for all those eyes.

When a vehicle is on the road, there are so many other activities as well as other road users that the driver has to pay close attention to. This simply means he or she has to keep watch on both the oncoming as well as following cars to be able to make good judgment while driving. If you are on a supper highway, the vehicles to watch even grow in number with those overtaking you also becoming important to monitor.

It is the need to keep watch over all the events taking place around you as you drive that leads to the need to tune up all the eyes at your disposal. If you cannot see the cars behind you very clearly, it becomes very difficult to change lanes or even to overtake the vehicles in front. This is because you cannot calculate or estimate the speeds of the other road users well enough if you cannot see them in the first place.

When it comes to the aspect of tuning the mirror to capture the full view of cars approaching from the back, you have to start by understanding that you have a total of three mirrors to use. The right side mirror, the left side mirror and the overhead drive mirror. All of these are used to view what is approaching from the back but each of them should have its own field of view.

Failure to understand exactly what areas each mirror should be covering will lead to a poor ability to judge distances when on the highway. It is important to start by managing each mirror at ago. We will start by the left side mirror assuming that the vehicle in question is a right hand drive car. It is significant to lean furthest to the right side window while on the driving seat. At this position, you need to push the mirror either inwards or outwards until you can only see one quarter to one third of the sides of the car, the rest of the view should be focused on what is besides the car such as any vehicles on the next lane.

When it comes to the mirror on your immediate side which is the right side mirror, you should also lean comfortably in driving position and pull it either inwards or outwards until it captures about one quarter to one third of your car side and the wider range of about two thirds or more for other vehicles that may be in the next lane. This way, you will be able to see more of the other road users and that makes you navigate well knowing what your position is in relation to other road users.

A common mistake that many people commit when positioning the side mirror is to tune in to capture more of the sides of your car as compared to the area next to the car. The emphasis of the side mirror is not to help you see the car you are driving but the cars or other road users who may be closer to you when driving. After all it is your duty to steer clear of this other road users and not to steer away from your own car.

For the overhead drive mirror, its importance is relatively great as well even though it is assumed that cars coming from the rear should watch their own distance as you mind about things in the front or sides. This particular mirror should be tuned to capture the immediate full view of the back of the car. It should cover this area very squarely as it comes in very handy during reverse driving. By understanding why and how to adjust your rear view mirrors, you are assured of a safer driving experience at all times.
